Work Life Balance

Last week I wrote about choice. This week I’m writing about choice’s bastard cousin: balance.

Choice

I didn’t enjoy school. Yeah I was one of those kids, left many a crying or frustrated teacher. So Be It. I didn’t enjoy the structure, the time demands, the lessons…everything sucked about school. Work is not much better. It’s 2011 we’re way past the Industrial Revolution and a farming society. So why hasn’t everything else changed? We may party like it’s 1999 but we work like it’s 1799.

Fail Harder

To boldly step out of that limiting comfort zone.

Family First

When Big Money comes rolling in it’s important to keep it in the family.

It’s why growing up we play Monopoly with family members. You learn which members are ruthless, which ones handle their money well and which ones just flame out. S’the way the dice rolls sometimes.

compromise

Rock music has the 27 Club a fateful sad collection of typically talented musicians who only got to 27 felled by drugs or alcohol, meh just name any vice really. Hollywood doesn’t have a club but it does offer its share of cautionary tales.

No Pants

Am I the only one who thought the entire notion of going to school at 8:30am every single morning ridiculous? I’m a night owl…I only get to work, real work by 11pm or so. I suppose the logic was to prepare you for “the real world” and yet many businesses allow employees to work from home, flexhours and other similar perks. So: school is out of touch with reality. No matter. What school did get right was Summer. Yes Guy!

Few years back sociologist and speaker Richard Florida wrote a book called Who’s Your City? One of the book’s central tenants was the concept of finding the ideal location carefully balancing notions of work, play and other similar social activities.
