Morning Tea: Yo quiero Moonfall

Chicken Wings!

Jetpacks!

Moonfall! Brew a strong tea: yo!

The First Yo of The Day.

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”

~ Plato

Ain’t No Thing But A Chicken Wing…

As for today’s cover image: Yo quiero Taco Bell?

Taco Bell has added Chicken Wings to give you yet another reason to spend dedicated time in the bathroom (“Ma bell, I got the ill communications!”).

Least you can catch up on your reading; right?

McDonald’s couldn’t make chicken wings work; what the hubris…welcome to 2022.

NHL Lockdown Business

That’s not good business:

The NHL and its teams said they lost more than $1 billion from canceling 189 regular-season games in 2019-20 and barring fans from that season’s playoffs.”

And the ugly audacity of going back to that for the Leafs…and the Raptors. That’s horrible. (It gets worse if you factor in that it’s not “working.” How many people have gotten sick from going to NHL or NBA games? In Toronto or outside of Canada?)

NBA: All Star Returns…So Far…

Kyrie Irving has played in only 1 NBA game and still has more votes than 4 other guards including DRose.

That’s why he’s signed to Nike. Never doubt the marketing machine.

Otherwise no real surprises in the East Returns for NBA All Star.

While here are the West Returns for NBA All Star. Klay Thompson earning all these votes is a single tear sign of love. That’s nice; every so often humanity gets it right.

But like who is voting for Melo?! Are you drunk and/or high? West NBA All Star voting returns. #NBA #BallorFall

#NBA: Is Playing for Team Ruckus?

This has been an utterly enjoyable chippy NBA season.

I dunno if it’s men with cojones who refuse to back down or fraying mental health during an endless pandemic or players with a chip on their shoulders, lack of respect: the why doesn’t matter if we get more. #TeamRuckus #BallorFall

Rescuing Norman Mailer

Back on March 6, 2020 Hachette employees had a childish temper tantrum and embarrassingly refused to publish Woody Allen’s Apropos of Nothing.

(It’s his best book; highly recommended for comedy nerds!)

Skyhorse Publishing wisely published it; now they’re doing good again. Thank you for your service.

“The independent press Skyhorse acquired a new book by Norman Mailer after Mailer’s longtime publisher, Random House, declined to make an offer on the submission.”

Sweet Sci-Fi Jetpacks!

(Please Note: I’ve no way to verify this video is accurate or under what agenda it was upload to Twitter.)

If this is real this is fresh. How soon until everyone gets a jetpack?

Can we use this for action movies? Create ruckus??

#TrailerAlert: Moonfall

We got a last-ditch space mission to save Earth, a dismissed conspiracy theorist who was right! And a mysterious alien force hell bent on destroying earth.

I’m 100% In for Moonfall. #TeamRuckus reporting for duty. Mash Those Puny Humans! Mash em good!

#SetTheVCR…PSA: Indivisible – Healing Hate

Paramount+ cashes in on January 6th with Indivisible – Healing Hate.

The six-part docuseries is narrated by Mandy Patinkin and is streaming now. Yup.

It asks: “how did we become so divided, and what can be done to heal the hate?” Okay.

~ Washington Irving #HandleYourBusiness

The Black Phone…It’s For You?

As for today’s cover image: “New Black Phone; Who Dis?” The Black Phone will be in cinemas on June 24.

A Raptors Dynasty??

I’ve grown weary of this Masai narrative: “He is not content with just winning one title.” He says this all the time.

Raptors are great at identifying talent; yet lousy at winning. Even if they stumble into the playoffs this season then what? A first round exit?

Dynasties are inspiring. They deny others glory and firmly establish a viciously high standard of excellence. Look what Jordan did 3 times. Kobe and the Lakers. High standards by which others must rise and fall.

NBA: Boogie Is Free

Can the Nets Boogie with DeMarcus Cousins??

Here’s my honest truth: I have zero respect for the Bucks. The coach is lousy and frowzy; I wouldn’t trust him in a pie eating content.

So can Brooklyn employ DeMarcus like an assassin with a 6 Foul Gun to Hack-a-Shaq Giannis? Maybe even gather a rebound or two? #BallorFall

#NBA: Kyrie Irving Has Returned…So Now What?

Why didn’t Kyrie Irving play earlier in the season? Even part-time?

While the science is sound as a pound this whole pandemic we’ve over sold the “benefits” of militant solidarity.

This ain’t high school, yo: a trail means you’re just following in somebody else’s footsteps. Yes some people won’t follow the pandemic rules; nobody promised a fair life. #BallorFall

No Dancing At Sundance

The Sundance Film Festival has gone online.

That sucks raw eggs for all the filmmakers most especially for the rookies.

Instead of a theatrical premiere you get a distracted dude at home watching from a cracked ipad and pausing anytime he wants well…when he isn’t on his phone. (That lack of transparency is what makes it difficult to trust reviews like that. Did you actually watch the movie or needlessly pause it or ignore whole chunks by texting??)

And that’s the film aspect…for rookie filmmakers there is all the networking. Film Festivals are great because they pack the room…you can meet anyone at a party or event. How are we supposed to network during a pandemic when the media continues to advocate for social distancing via stranger danger??

Sweet Sci-Fi

The only good Alfonso Cuarón movie: Children Of Men. (Gravity can suck it…twice!) So much sci-fi ruckus and I say that knowing Clive Owen never picks up a gun.

I appreciate super dark; super grim #scifi. Hopefully we gets lots in 2022.

#TrailerAlert: Uncharted

Uncharted released the Plane Fight scene that was the highlight of the trailer.

Proving yet again CGI is incredible; unlike practical effects you can use CGI to increase the danger; tighten the tension while keeping the actors relatively safe. (see the John Wick movies for more examples.)

#SetTheVCR…PSA: Pam & Tommy

Pam & Tommy contains a Mötley Crüe cast; you’ll recognize all the faces.

Though word on the street is the 8 episode limited series has a lot of “shortcomings.” #Rimshot

February 2nd: #Disney+ in Canada; Hulu for Americans. That’s nice…we’re all on the same page.

The Umbrella Academy…Is Coming?

As for today’s cover image: On January 1st The Sparrow Academy via @thesparrowacad_ released these individual character images tweet by tweet. Here’s the whole collection of the Sparrows.

Marketing hype means we’re inching closer to a drop date: November 2020 The Umbrella Academy was renewed for a third season set for release in 2022.

To C-B-C or Not To C-B-C…That’s The Question…

Tara Henley a writer and broadcaster most notably with the CBC has penned: Why I resigned from the CBC and went to Substack. Speaking freely.”

This is a fascinating perspective; freedom is far more valuable than acceptance.

Getting upset because someone is “abusing” free speech is silly; that’s like freaking out over self-driving car accidents. That’s naturally going to happen: that’s the process.

In April 2021 Paul Pierce was fired from ESPN and being a regular on The Jump. He talked to SI about his frustrating TV experience and saying:

“There’s a lot of stuff over there that you can’t say. And you have to talk about LeBron all the time.” (Ugh I know…some of them on ESPN even refer to him as King. I understand how rating economics work especially for ESPN I just don’t agree with it.)

So I get it. I can understand the frustration with an arduous institution like the CBC which echoes Paul Pierce’s comments.

So Tara Henley like many other journalists has found an outlet that facilitates her freedom; she’s now “free” to pursue different stories; elevate unique voices and have fun. Okay then. Let’s see where all this goes. Without the backing of a large organization her work will rise and fall on timeless principles such as quality and sound journalism.

Bottom Line? That’s fantastic.

Be Free.

#ChairDancing…David Bowie

Sirius XM are Heroes because they’ve launched a David Bowie Station to Station so Ziggy can score Modern Love in his Golden Years.

Team Ruckus: A John Wick 4 Update

This violent franchise works because it’s stingy with details; MCU movies while loads of fun are burdened with long slow scenes of exposition. I get it.

Still it’s refreshing 3 movies in and we know so little about this dirty underworld. Yes!

Clancy Brown a new face for the franchise talks about his Wick role and…the High Table. oooo. John Wick 4 has been pushed from its May 2022 release date to March 24, 2023.

#SetTheVCR…PSA: Through My Window

Prime Video scored a hit with The Voyeurs because…well lotta people wanted to enjoy the Sydney Sweeney peep show. She did what was expected; the corny movie was a big hit for the streamer and we all went on our way. The System Works.

Netflix’s version is a pervy Rear Window (emphasis on Rear…) called Through My Window.

Enjoy for the peep show.

As for today’s cover image: I always check out a stand up comic’s sneakers soon as he comes out.

Especially for specials because dope kicks make a special truly special.

Here is what Roy Wood Jr wore for his latest special Imperfect Messenger: 1985 Nike Dunk High Acid Wash.

There should be a blog for comedy and kicks.

Disney+ Is Taking It To The IMAX!

Disney Plus is trying! I just wish the actual monthly offerings look as good as this…

Disney Plus is the first major streaming service to provide the Imax Enhanced features for at-home viewing (although of course without Imax’s gargantuan screens).

The 13 titles available in the Imax-enhanced format include the Disney Plus premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings on Nov. 12. The others are Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Black Widow. Ok then…#SetTheVCR??

A #SetTheVCR…PSA: Snowpiercer: Season 3 circles around on January 24, 2022.

Bring It On!

#SetTheVCR…#PSA: Atlanta: Season 3

Atlanta: Season 2 ended 2018. And it was only 11 episodes. To take this long the standards for Season 3 are ridiculous. If Hiro Murai is back then so am I! Dude directed 7 of the first season’s 10 episodes, 7 episodes of Season 2 including “Teddy Perkins.” That dude is the unsung hero of this series. He In; I’m in!

I Got Furious Over This Real Fast!

“Vin Diesel Asks Dwayne Johnson To Return For Fast And Furious Conclusion.”

Nah Man: Don’t Be Weak.

Fast and Furious movies are better without The Rock.

It’s bad enough Paul Walker won’t conclude the saga.

Don’t Hobbs-le the franchise with Dwayne Johnson.

This clown made Rampage and Skyscraper. Hit the bricks. The series is called Furious so be it.

#SetTheVCR…PSA: Stranger Things: Season 4

Let’s visit 1986 in the Stranger Things: Season 4 trailer: Welcome to California. (What happened to Hawkins?!)

That’s one year after The Breakfast Club came out…which is roughly how old the cast of kids is now. Are they in college yet? This season takes place during spring break so it should be wild.

The fourth season will have nine episodes and Chapter One is entitle The Hellfire Club.

I know the Hellfire Club is real but I’m assuming because it’s Stranger Things this is a fun Marvel comics reference.

If you’ve seen X-Men: First Class you know who the Hellfire Club are. Otherwise that’s a deep cut for nerds only. That’s fresh!

“A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything.” ~ Malcolm X

How James Bond iconic is this Iron Man cover?

5th of November

As for today’s cover image: Remember, Remember The 5th of November according to British Tyler Durden. V For Vendetta terrible comic book adaptation as like a straight up adaptation yet an utterly astonishing comic book movie…one of the best comic book movies.

Technically DC Films’ best movie aside from Superman II.

Kehinde Wiley Nice News

So dope to see Kehinde Wiley earning mainstream recognition. He’s one of my favourite modern painters…a phrase I shouldn’t say out loud too often. I’m classy but not that classy.

His paintings and even his techniques reference a lot of the Old Masters: if you know you know kinda thing.

A fantastic painter and here’s yet another example of just how good he is.

#CouchWorthy: Will Smith

So it’s not exactly Oprah but it’s still Will Smith. If you’re in Toronto this is #CouchWorthy.

#SetTheVCR…#PSA: YellowJackets

YellowJackets will premiere on Sunday, November 14 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.

However the premiere episode is freely available on YouTube, Showtime on Demand etc.

They didn’t make this for me so I’m out. I figure if you liked The Wilds you’ll dig this.

Y Are You Like This!

“Y” Y: The Last Man was cancelled. Though if you’ve watched this show especially after reading the excellent comics the answer is a fairly obvious: Y Not?

Lousy sci-fi, the pandemic, costly budgets, terrible writing; bloated politics, a writing agenda and an awful cast. Crash and Burn Huh Mav? The comics are outstanding and in this case stick with those. Skip the show.

The NBA 75th Anniversary Season: Remember D?

If you’re playing basketball you’re supposed to play Defense.

To paraphrase Chris Rock from 1996’s Bring The Pain: “What do you want, a cookie?! You’re “supposed to play D,” you low-expectation-having motherfucker! Man, I am tired of this shit!”

#TrailerAlert: Kurt Vonnegut – Unstuck in Time

New Day; New Last Dance

Magic Johnson is getting a Last Dance.

A four-part docuseries (double what HBO gave to Tiger Woods…jerks!) from Rick Famuyiwa. (Dope is a “dope” movie…check it out.)

I like this doc way better than Adam McKay’s fictional Lakers movie where Quincy Isaiah plays Magic.

John Wick Ruckus: Team Ruckus!

“Woah!” Trick Riding looks so fun. I’ve ridden a horse and it’s a dull slightly humiliating experience for both of us. But Trick Riding…dangling off the side like that? Now that’s horse riding…I’d City Slickers that up hard.

A Choice Of Weapons

A Choice Of Weapons is the Gordon Parks doc trailer: look how good this is! Oh so making a tea for this one.

It’s directed by John Maggio and Jamel Shabazz is in this. That alone is worth the time investment. (I still can’t believe I got to hang out with Jamel for an afternoon in his Long Island studio and just get into…all of it. So Dope.)

November 15 at 10 p.m. on HBO Max. #SetTheVCR

New Day; New National Treasure

Oh what a condescending downgrade from Nicolas Cage.

Lisette Alexis (whoever that is…) will be the star of the Disney+ National Treasure series.

That’s as wretched as Doogie Kamealoha. There’s no way this’ll be good. Impossible.

Skip the trailer: I’m 100% out.

Make another movie with Cage and I’ll happy be back.

#NBA: Kinda/Sorta

Just brilliant. “A populist snob: what you’re saying is you want to attract a lot of people but you have a standard that you won’t cross.”

That’s it…right there. That’s the money. Populist Snob. So good; soul good!

Off Beat Cinema at 28

As for today’s cover image: Off Beat Cinema is 28 years old! They posted this:

“Bird, Zelda, and Theo thank you — one and all — for 28 yrs of #OffBeatCinema fun! We’ve been aired throughout the country longer than anyone would have imagined. Our commitment to show the movies that must be shown is made strong by all our groovy viewers. Keep watching the sky!”

Way to go on 28 years! I know I’ve benefitted from many of those 28 years lots and lots of wonderful B-movies and so much more.

Los Angeles Outlines Path To Lifting Mask Mandate

The mask needs to be evict from pop culture experiences: ASAP!

If people wanna wear it as a cheezy talisman cool story bro etc. So much for “Trust Science!!” and all that.

Did You Watch The Game Last Night?

The NBC Sports Network will shut down by the end of 2021. “NBC made it official today: NBCSN is shutting down on December 31st, with much of the live sports content moving to USA Network.”

Partly Peacock…that’s where some of the NBCSN coverage will end up.

Which mirrors the NFL on Prime Video.

Live Sports is so not going away…how we watch em is though. Welcome to 2021.

“There’s value in everybody.”

It’s funny how it works huh? You adopt; knowing you can give a kid trapped in awful circumstances a better life but…then the opposite happens.

Michael made Ernie Johnson’s life better: he taught him a lot…how to be patient. Grace.

Death is never an easy time: cling to those wonderful lessons and takeaways. Then find a way to share them; give them away.

He’s good; that doesn’t mean you are or you can be. Know your limits and play within it.

Who You Gonna Call?

Confirmed! I am 100% Out: Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The reason this one is called Afterlife is because the last Ghostbusters movie (Chickbusters) was so wretched it rightfully got killed.

This is not an improvement; this is like the latest Terminator movie (also inferior). So Nope. I’m ghosting Ghostbusters.

New Day; New Stephen King Adaptation

The Boogeyman from King’s 1978 collection Night Shift is gonna become a Hulu movie.

This’ll be the third adaptation for this short story…last one was in 2010.

We’re lived long enough to see an era of Stephen King movie remakes now.

Derrick Henry Injury

As for today’s cover image: I’m not an NFL guy though I’ve been paying more attention the last few seasons.

Derrick Henry is a bulldozer and fantastic to watch. Does adding more games to the NFL season impact injury reports?

A team’s record still matters (because winning will always matter) but is it possible for some players to return in time now that the season is longer?

When The Garden Is Eden Part 2: This Time It’s Personal

It’s not just the return of the Knicks: the NYC story is truly the return of the glorious Garden.

That’s fresh.

But don’t forget about this Toronto-ish NBA moment: In the early 80s the Cavs owner was that era’s James Dolan.

We need to pick this up. Let’s Go!

It doesn’t matter what people’s comfort levels are: let em stay home and grumble on Twitter.

Keep opening up especially for dynamic services such as the Toronto Public Library.

Let’s get this back on track. Starting this coming Sunday, October 17, many library branches will be open on Sundays from 1:30-5:00 pm.

Don’t Deny Others Pop Culture…Life?

Netflix trans employees plan to stage a walkout next week as per the Verge and Bloomberg (the company will also host activist Alok Vaid-Menon next week. I dunno what that is but I am not gonna Google it.) Why? Of course Dave Chappelle’s comedy (I’ll say it for those in the back: COMEDY) special The Closer.

(What happened to the 80s stance of shut up and change the channel?! Change the channel was a simple recognition that this TV show…comedy special was not made for me. Move along…nothing to see here.)

We did all this before: on March 6, 2020 Hachette workers walked out in protest of Woody Allen’s excellent memoir. (It still got published. Highly Recommended Reading.) That was wrong; this is no different.

Always stand by The Creators.

They’re the ones who endlessly bless us with pop culture and with life and happiness!

Captain Kirk Went To Space

William Shatner attempting to explain seeing Earth from space is called The Overview Effect.

“The overview effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from outer space.”

The more we all go to space the more we shift; the more we shift the more than that benefits environmental causes and dilutes the poison of Twitter. So grateful for the billionaire space race: fresh hope for humanity.

Shout out and much thanks to everyone who purchased something from Amazon to fund Jeff Bezos’ wealth and give us this freshtastic moment. Well Done; Well Won. Hope, yo! #SpaceIsThePlace

And yes I know it’s only 9 minutes but dude’s 90! We still don’t know the impact of seniors in space. Even if Space Cowboys came out 21 years ago. This is a good test; build on this data.

Plus you wanna hear a senior complain for hours: “I’m cold!”

“Are we there yet?”

“Where? I can’t see it where is the Earth?!”

That’s gotta be fun to go to space. Even briefly. William Shatner has led an incredible life. Even if you acknowledge T.J. Hooker.

Canada VS UBI

Canada needs to catch up on a lot of things.

UBI is just a good logical start.

What a waste of a recent election.

Is Clickbait All We’re Gonna Net from Kyrie Irving?!

We went through all of this with Kaepernick.

Many elaborate bloggers posing as journalists cranked out shallow referendums, lukewarm POVs, clickbait and utterly inferior writing. Kaepernick generated a pop culture hot mess that was loud on personality; short on facts an overwhelming obnoxious experience.

Now in 2021 Look how much utter junk Kyrie Irving has created: junk hashtags, junk posts, junk lies etc.

“Multiple sources with direct knowledge of Kyrie Irving’s decision have told The Athletic that Irving is not anti-vaccine and that his stance is that he is upset that people are losing their jobs due to vaccine mandates.”

So here we are. Kyrie Irving’s only responsibility is to his team: End of Story. Case Closed.

#SetTheVCR: The NHL??

The burgeoning Americana of the NHL makes it oddly compelling.

Why would anyone sit through a Calgary Flames game after this?!

Sports fans don’t pay for an #NHL game or an NBA game.

#TrailerAlert: The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill who gave us Sinister (and Doctor Strange!) have returned with The Black Phone.

This trailer looks good like food. It’s Joe Hill story adaptation…he’s a hack writer so hopefully Cargill improved the writing.

February 4, 2022 and I’m 100% IN.

(Ethan Hawke has had a strange career. A great one for sure but man the movies that dude decides to make are always worth a look. Brad Pitt has cranked out some strange movies (12 Monkeys etc.) but for the most part nobody is this good, this weird and this consistent as Ethan Hawke.) #FearPee

#SetTheVCR Meets New Book Alert: Welcome Netflix Book Club

I dunno who Uzo Aduba is so it’s hard to have any hope she’ll do a good job with Netflix Book Club.

Oprah’s totally obnoxious but at least she spoon feeds books to people. “Open Wide!”

If this gets more people reading and benefits good writers then this marketing propaganda is worth it.
