Automatonophobia

Cutting through the Eaton Centre I witness a retail clerk manhandling a mannequin. Roughly jerking her clothes down, gripping her swimsuit areas…the clerk is neither efficient or gentle.

Hidden Gem: Jewel feat Dolly Parton “My Father’s Daughter”

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

Remember Jewel? I recently caught her Howard Stern interview…I was shocked…as in oh yeah Jewel. Jewel was so big back in the day and then she seemed to disappear; I’d totally forgotten about her. She’s back with a new album; but it’s this standout track that drew my attention.

Garbage Time: 2015-2016 NBA Season Preview

The 70th NBA season begins on Tuesday, October 27.

Following a Warriors championship (that my co-host on Garbage Time Craig White readily marks with an asterisk because they didn’t defeat healthy teams) there were trades and signings and rookies and coaching changes: I’m waiting for the dust to settle to see what the new starting 5s will look like.

In the meantime here are a handful of NBA storylines I’m eagerly following…

Trailer Alert: Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

We’re entering a strange and unmapped area of hip hop: it’s existed long enough that it is time to look back and recognize—like tracks in the snow—just how far we’ve traversed.

Jay-Z and Q-Tp are 45 years old, two years older than Eminem. Dre is 50. It’s awfully hard for any of hip hop’s elder statesmen to convincingly rap about the mean streets. These are the breaks.

Tupac, Biggie, Jam Master Jay and J Dilla are dead. That ain’t no joke.

Hip hop is slowly deeply maturing while still struggling with its most prominent contradiction the street vs the boardroom. Like your past you can only make peace with contradictions.

Hidden Gem: Cœur de Pirate “Carry On”

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

At the end of August Cœur de pirate released a new album Roses…I’ve been slowly steadily working through it. One of her best and strongest.

She’s this attractive French Canadian girl…a tough and fierce package…you can’t see it in this video but on her arm she’s got this amazing tattoo of Alice in Wonderland armed with an Elgin pistol and a cutlass; met her briefly at a TIFF party couple years back and I was mesmerized by the tattoo…why does Alice have a Elgin pistol AND a cutlass? Or rather…why not?

Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em

Small child talking to me when they got stuck trying to communicate…
“My-my-my-my…”

Trying to be helpful I instantly finished their thought: “music makes me so hard makes me say oh my Lord thank you for blessing me with a mind to rhyme and 2 hype feet!”

Ten Forward Is Still Backwards…

One of the fascinating aspects of hanging out with kids is recognizing what they’ll be missing. No kid will ever declare “I’m bored!” unless they’re dragged to grandma’s Luddite home. Netflix, the internet, mobile devices…look at video games!

Trailer Alert: The Man in the High Castle

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

Oh man what took so long!

Nazis winning World War II is a delicious traditional sci-fi literature trope; yet it’s rarely played out on tv/in the movies. (Has there been a recent visual exploration?) Allies losing the war is a sweet resource rich mine; loaded with endless possibilities, spirited unmapped avenues and infectious creativity.
