Hidden Gem: New Order “Restless”

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

I nearly burst into tears when I pushed play on this video…New Order are back! Oh how this band has been missed. While I enjoy Depeche Mode my 80s synth heart beats for New Order. I carved our names into a tree, giant heart…big arrow…the whole deal.

Birth Year Readings V

Round 5! I’ve no interest in a Fitbit so reading is pretty much the only aspect of my life I’m curious about tracking. Since September 28, 2011 I’ve read 199 books! Which is mildly impressive (“Hello Ladies!”)…and yet it doesn’t dent all that is constantly published, what else I’d like to consume and the dark and strange corners my curiosity pushes me into…asking better questions is far more fun than getting answers: I’m born in the wrong era I’d totally fit in on a Star Trek 5 year mission. Onward, forever forward I go.

To Recap:
Year 4: September 28, 2014 to September 27, 2015 I read:
360 comic books

56 books

100 comic book trades/graphic novels

Year 3: September 28, 2013 to September 27, 2014 I read:

442 comics

65 books

115 comic book trades/graphic novels

Year 2: September 28, 2012 to September 27, 2013 I read:

466 comics

43 books

100 comic book trades/graphic novels

Year 1: September 28, 2011 to September 27, 2012 I read:
486 comic books

35 books

99 comic book trades/graphic novels

And now…here’s where I’m at with Year 5:

Trailer Alert: Keith Richards: Under the Influence

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

The trailer for Under the Influence opens with remarkable self-awareness for an ancient celebrity: “I know who I am…but I realize people think Kith Richards is smoking a joint, bottle in his hand, cursing the fact that the liquor store’s closed.” That observation launches into that trademark phlegmy laugh slash cough seniors who are avid smokers possess.

Hidden Gem: Alessia Cara “Here (Live)”

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

Here instantly captured my attention with the clever Portishead? Glory Box sample. It took a couple of listens to actual move past the sample to “hear” what Alessia Cara was saying. She riffs like Def Poetry Jam in structure and style. I don’t understand how the machine…the system works?

How does a girl go from Brampton, Ontario to performing on BBC Radio 1?

Spider, Man!

Walked outta my front door and into…a spider web. What kind of dumb-stupid-spider builds a web by the front door? You idiot-spider I use the front door all the time! Yo butthead that’s why it’s called the front door. You did all that overnight work for nothing. I hope Bob Seger finds you and ridicules your Night Moves.

RE: Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky

Yes! From page 41 of Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky:
“Trentway-Wagar was arguing that because carpooling used to be inconvenient, it should always be inconvenient…Curiously, an organization that commits to helping society manage a problem also commits itself to the preservation of that same problem, as its institutional existence hinges on society’s continued need for its management. Bus companies provide a critical service—public transportation—but they also commit themselves, as Trentway-Wagar did, to fending off competition from alternative ways of moving people from one place to another.”

Sequel Lust

We had our big nerdfest over the weekend…nerd b.o. and hot girls in cosplay. I’m sharing because this occurred during the Mr. Robot panel: Q&A moderator Jonathan Dekel brought up a text message he received from Pump Up the Volume director Allan Moyle asking Christian Slater if he’d be willing to play Hard Harry again.

Hidden Gem: Lupe Fiasco “Prisoner 1 & 2”

Sammy Younan

Girth Radio Presents…

Like most people Kanye West’s Touch The Sky introduced me to Lupe Fiasco. His debut album came with Kick, Push a smooth rap song about skateboarders. Alright Lupe you have my attention; once he had that I was rewarded with The Cool. An outstanding rap album: complex, dark and soaked in creativity.
