Outta Compton & Outta Documentaries
Busy hip hop day…we got the Straight Outta Compton trailer…the N.W.A biopic and news that 2 Live Crew have reunited. Wonder if the tour is called as Old as They Wanna Be. #RimShot
YouTube’s algorithm has already judged Straight Outta Compton as a crap carnival since it’s equally recommending winners like Boy Next Door, Unfriended etc. It’s hard to argue you have “good taste” when the algorithm has proof you do not.
Q: What’s the business decision making process of biopics vs making a documentary? ROI? Economics? I always prefer documentaries over biopics even if the footage isn’t always there: with a biopic you can shoot whatever you want.
You know…N.W.A, Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest etc. growing up those were our punk bands. Aggressive articulate dissent; the light schools dimmed. I bet as our generation ages and some of us succumb to Alzheimers we’ll still be able to spit Ice Cube’s Straight Outta Compton verse. #Gombo
Remember when white suburban moms protested the indecency of N.W.A and 2 Live Crew? Man that was futile and so embarrassing. You can’t stop hip hop! Come to think of it white suburban moms own a legacy of failure.
Elvis’ hips to N.W.A…have white suburban moms ever been successful? Or has their protests allowed their fears and those careers to flourish? That should be a music doc: it’s cool that you can make a documentary on any subject these days. I tend to stick with political, business and music docs. There’s a ton of music docs just out or about to come out. It’s great but it’s a full time job just to track em all down.
Great documentaries are windows into worlds we’re unfamiliar with.
To go full circle with a busy hip hop day: I’m utterly determined before I sink into the Big Sleep to ensure there’s a proper Rick Rubin doc. So Necessary.
