Following the success of Batman in 1990 Tim Burton began working on Edward Scissorhands…I’m reading Last Night at the Viper Room: River Phoenix and the Hollywood He Left Behind (no spoilers I don’t wanna know how the book ends) by Gavin Edwards.

Burton reached out to River Phoenix to play Edward. S’decent casting…it could work. However they auditioned/talked to other popular actors for Edward Scissorhands including…

Tom Cruise (?? That’s so way off it’s offensive!)
Tom Hanks (no!)
William Hurt (stop it!)
and Robert Downey, Jr. (that could work but so hard to picture)

Depp’s rock solid in this movie and of course that was the beginning of Depp & Burton. So glad they got it “right.”
