Small Talk: U2’s Joshua Tree Grammy

Today marks the 30th anniversary of U2’s The Joshua Tree…which won a grammy for Album Of The Year.

Which begs the question…what was it running against? Here ya go…

For the 30th grammy awards broadcast on March 2, 1988 the Album Of The Year nominations were:
Winner: U2, The Joshua Tree
Whitney Houston, Whitney (I Wanna Dance with Somebody)
Michael Jackson, Bad
Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris And Linda Ronstadt, Trio
Prince, Sign ‘O’ The Times

3 Observations:
Didn’t We Almost Have It All was also on that Whitney album. Whitney is not an album artist…but she has big hits (kinda like Flo Rida…). Oh Whitney…

The Joshua Tree felt like a bigger album in America than Sign ‘O’ The Times. That might be nostalgia…I dunno if that’s actually true.

Oh yeah there’s a valid debate…what got left off: Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction, INXS Kick, Eric B. & Rakim Pain In Full were all 1987 albums…so much more: Smiths, George Michael, Depeche Mode and New Order. Big Year.
