Girth Radio Presents…

Some more Happy Halloween horror recommendations but that’s not all for this week’s #SetTheVCR if you’re in the mood to Netflix and Chiller…

Sunday, October 11

The Circus (8 p.m. / Showtime & Crave)
The Simpsons: Season 32: (“Now Museum, Now You Don’t”) (8 p.m. / Fox)
Fargo: Season 4: (“The Pretend War”) (9 p.m. / FX)

Sammy Suggestion: The Comedy Store (10 p.m. / Showtime)

Last week’s episode featured Michael Keaton’s comedy which included his esoteric reading of Bazooka Joe comics. (Errr…you gotta see it to believe it but it was a solid bit.) So…this week will we see comedy genius or comedy madness?

Monday, October 12

Sammy Suggestion: Eli Roth’s History of Horror: Uncut Podcast (Anytime / Spotify etc.)

In this space, I’ve written about the latest TV trend that all the cool kids are doing: issuing an official companion podcast to a popular TV show. However, this Shudder podcast will be one of the best. On Saturday, October 10 Eli Roth’s History of Horror: Season 2 kicked off, and all the guests on that show? The podcast is their candid uncut interviews from the show. That list of luminaries includes: Stephen King, Quentin Tarantino, Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, Bill Hader, Nancy Allen, Megan Fox, Greg Nicotero, Rob Zombie, James Brolin, Edgar Wright, Piper Laurie, Leonard Maltin, Katharine Isabelle, Jack Black, Slash, Rachel True, Ashley Laurence, Joe Dante, Roger Corman, Mary Harron, John Landis, Tom Savini, Karyn Kusama, and many others. The Bill Hader episode is already out now; new podcast episodes every Monday.

Tuesday, October 13

Evil Eye (Anytime / Amazon Prime)

Sammy Suggestion: Nocturne (Anytime / Amazon Prime)

A classical musician turns to one of the classics! A deal with the devil for fame and fortune…I mean what could wrong? She even uses a “mysterious notebook” that belonged to a deceased classmate…she committed suicide. Shoutout to all the fools in horror movies who don’t “Bach” at the red flags to entertain us.

Wednesday, October 14

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting Blood (Anytime / Netflix)
Moneyball (Anytime / Netflix)

Sammy Suggestion: War of The Worlds: Episode 2 (8 p.m. / CBC)

So…it turned out the space signal from Ross 128 was bad; Episode 1 concluded with the alien attack. I mean the show is called War of the Worlds so you kinda knew that was coming. (You’re not surprised watching Haunting of Bly Manor to see ghosts are you?!) Episode 2 will no doubt focus on the survivors and hopefully, what their new world is like as we’ve seen in the Walking Dead there’s a natural adjustment period. Episode 1 was “Wells-done;” great pacing focused on the end goal yet patiently working. If you want a horror break and are up for some solid sci-fi here ya go. (Wednesday nights on CBC though all episodes will also be added to CBC Gem. Season 2 has been entirely shot so the “war” is not over.)

Thursday, October 15

Des (Anytime / Sundance Now)
Batman: The Killing Joke (Anytime / Netflix)
Star Trek: Discovery (Anytime / CBS All Access)
A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote (Anytime / HBO Max)

Sammy Suggestion: Mr. Mercedes: Season 1-3 (Anytime / Peacock)

Mr. Mercedes has arrived on Peacock! Easily one of the best Stephen King adaptations…in yo’face Castle Rock; and sorry IT with John Ritter and see you in hell Langoliers with Bronson Pinchot! Brendan Gleeson is an Irish treasure and outstanding like the show’s soundtrack. Mr. Mercedes rocks the disco and jams the nightclub. Based on the spellbinding Mr. Mercedes trilogy (Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, and End of Watch) over 3 seasons the series combines supernatural elements, a murder mystery; devious characters, and characters seeking redemption. There’s also a lazy turtle if you dig animals. Enjoy…you’re so in for a treat.

Friday, October 16

Marvel’s Helstrom: Season 1 (Anytime / Hulu)
The Way I See It (10 p.m. / MSNBC)

Sammy Suggestion: The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Anytime / Netflix)

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is written and with a rare bonus directed by Aaron Sorkin easily among the best of us. So that’s it…it’s Aaron Sorkin: you’re either in or you’re out.

Saturday, October 17

Sammy Suggestion: David Byrne’s American Utopia (8 p.m. / HBO & Crave)

It’s David Byrne. That’s it…that’s the hook. Dude is an automatic IN!
