New Book Alert: April 13-17, 2020

Girth Radio Presents…

My weekly collection of new and notable books for your pop culture pleasure and edification: #ReadMoreTweetLess.

Final Draft: The Collected Work of David Carr by David Carr (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; Journalism on sale April 7, 2020): We lost David Carr in 2015. All the nonsense we foolishly promote: hashtags, moral calisthenics; moral superiority etc. is worthless: all that’s left behind…is The Work. All that matters is The Work. So do good work. S’it. #NewBookAlert for April 13, 2020.

No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram by Sarah Frier (Simon & Schuster; Silicon Valley on sale April 14, 2020): Pics or it didn’t happen right? This Follows Steven Levy’s superb Facebook: The Inside Story which came out at the end of February. Read em both: back to back! #NewBookAlert for April 14, 2020.

Fortitude: American Resilience in the Era of Outrage by Dan Crenshaw (Twelve Books; Politics on sale April 7, 2020): “Try hard not to offend. Try even harder to not be offended.” While Dan Crenshaw is a Republican the political template is universal: write a book. Put your manifesto down on paper. You can read books from just about everybody who ran in 2020. And remember: nobody has asked you to agree. Your responsibility is to be informed and open to ideas. Save you tantrums for Twitter popularity. #NewBookAlert for April 15, 2020.

The Victory Machine: The Making and Unmaking of the Warriors Dynasty by Ethan Sherwood Strauss (PublicAffairs; NBA on sale April 14, 2020): I was hoping to see the Warriors win 4 championships in a row. Just once in my lifetime: I wanna see an NBA team pull off 4 in a row. A 3-peat is so hard yet utterly undeniable. Well. It was not meant to be. Hopefully, The Victory Machine explains why. #NewBookAlert for April 16, 2020.

Weird: The Power of Being an Outsider in an Insider World by Olga Khazan (Hachette Go; Handle Yo’Business on sale April 7, 2020): It takes no courage to use the sidewalk. That’s the path laid out for everybody. Do you wanna be everybody or do you wanna be somebody? You won’t always be appreciated for being weird (we’re still doing that whole stupid rejection thing) but in many ways…it is worth it. So go forth: Be Weird. #NewBookAlert for April 17, 2020.
