My Summer Lair Chapter #108: Can You Cope With Hope?

In a rare attempt to appear classy…I went to see Human Animals yes a play. (My tuxedo t-shirt was still wrinkled…so I kept some of my Happy Sammy essence. Whew.)

“Theatre company ARC is pleased to present the North American premiere of Human Animals, a timely and provocative play about humankind’s precarious place within the natural world, by one of the UK’s most exciting young female dramatists Stef Smith.”

On stage February 22–March 16 in the new East End Arts Space at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse the play features 6 actors including Ryan Hollyman (who was in X-Men: Apocalypse as Cyclops’ Dad…way to blow it buddy! Terrible parenting!) and my guest Arlen Aguayo-Stewart.

Who is such a treat! As I talked to her about the the play’s environmental themes she thinks before speaks. She openly shares from her life and from her heart as we get into all the issues surrounding the play.

Human Animals is a dystopian play set in the near-future where we watch 6 characters cope with a worsening environmental crisis. Some cope badly; others like Arlen’s character attempt to cope with hope.Meanwhile things continue to get worse. If you’ve ever been on social media and see the odd metrics people use to measure progress or to determine things are getting better/worse you’ll recognize this comfortable panic.

Go if you can…it’s thought provoking. Don’t take my word for it…listen to Arlen. If you’re captivated by her you you can see Arlen in Les routes en février (which means Roads in February) which should be at the TIFF Lightbox soon.
