American Pie is one of those wildly popular songs that everybody knows but I actually don’t know what it means. Yes this is a documentary on Don McLean’s song not the 1999 movie with Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy. So this documentary will be a DVD commentary for the popular song unpacking the song’s construction and providing historical context. Basically Don McLean’s American Pie song is getting the Last Dance treatment.

ESPN’s voice of college basketball for more than four decades has been dealing with cancer so this is a celebration as much as it’s a “living wake.” Programming Note: Dickie V will have its linear debut Saturday, July 23 at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.

SAMMY SUGGESTION: DAVE CHAPPELLE: WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Dave Chappelle delivers a speech at his prestigious alma mater that reflects on his comedy roots, his rise to fame and why artists “should never behave.”

This isn’t a Dave Chappelle comedy special. Rather it’s a speech more aligned with his comments he presented during the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019. Just like those comments this is a stirring reflection on the power of making good art. Think of it as one of those celebrity graduation speeches. The Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC, decided to rename its theatre after him. So Chappelle shared his happy history with the school, what it means to him (present tense) and so much more. This is a call to arms. It’s a beautiful message and anyone who creates anything for a living from films to a podcast would be wise to watch this.

SAMMY SUGGESTION: O.J.: MADE IN AMERICA (ANYTIME / DISNEY+)

A chronicle of the rise and fall of O.J. Simpson, whose high-profile murder trial exposed the extent of American racial tensions, revealing a fractured and divided nation.

This Summer Disney+ has (finally) begun adding 30 for 30s and ESPN Films documentaries. While there are a number of 30 for 30s I could highly recommended; one that is Must See TV is O.J.: Made in America. This 30 for 30 is a 7 hour documentary that covers race, sports, media, fame, violence…what we call The America Saga all through the lens of O.J. Right up to the whole “trail of the century” and the witty fool in the Naked Gun movies: it’s all happening. Go through this one slowly. O.J. Simpson got a Last Dance but it’s not what any of us expected.
