That Batman Joke

Since it’s Comic Con (at Home) and I know many people here have attended that or similar cons in person; especially the panels. But ah: not all panels are created equally; some crash and burn huh Mav.

Here’s a quirky Nerd Fun Fact I learned yesterday.

To promote the upcoming Green Hornet TV program set to premiere on September 9, 1966, they held a press party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. This introduction was a ceremonial luncheon attended by scores of television and motion picture executives and some sixty members of the press.

The producer William Dozier who you know as the Batman 66 narrator (“Same Bat time! Same Bat Channel!”) opened with a lame Batman joke:

“What happens if Batman and Robin are run over by a steam roller?
They come out Flatman and Ribbon.”

Wow. In retrospect it’s easy to see why Green Hornet was doomed; cancelled after a year. Yikes. (Shoutout to the 1966 journalists who wrote that down with a straight face so I can read about it in 2020.)

(I also learned that George W. Trendle who co-created The Lone Ranger in the 30s also co-created Green Hornet and in a move that not even Stan Lee pulled off made both characters family. In the original radio incarnation, Britt Reid is the son of Dan Reid, Jr., the nephew of John Reid, the Lone Ranger, making the Green Hornet the grand-nephew of the Ranger. What! Yo.)

So that’s good…hopefully, like myself, you are less ignorant today. You’re welcome society.
