New Book Alert: January 27-31, 2020

My weekly collection of new and notable books for your pop culture pleasure and edification: #ReadMoreTweetLess.

Do the Fucking Work: Lowbrow Advice for High-Level Creativity by Brian Buirge & Jason Bacher & Jason Richburg (Harper Design; Work on sale December 30, 2019): In honour of Kobe’s tragic passing: Do the Fucking Work (#DoTheFuckingWork should be permanently trending on Twitter. So many worthless shortcuts!). That’s all that matters: Do The Work. The race card doesn’t matter; it’s not easy, it’s not fair etc. etc. Do The Work. Out now from Good Fucking Design Advice. #NewBookAlert for January 27, 2020.

Prosper’s Demon by K.J. Parker (Tor.Com Publishing; Novel on sale January 28, 2020): “In a botched demonic extraction…” To which Chris Rock says on his Netflix special Tamborine: “I know it’s hard. I know that shit’s dangerous. I know it is, ok? But some jobs can’t have bad apples. Some jobs, everybody gotta be good.” Hah…yes! #NewBookAlert for January 28, 2020.

Mycroft and Sherlock: The Empty Birdcage by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar & Anna Waterhouse (Titan Books; Novel on sale September 24, 2019): From another great Laker (RIP Kobe…) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s latest is his third Mycroft & Sherlock book: The Empty Birdcage. So behind on this series. Sigh. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has turned in a fantastic writer non-fiction and surprisingly fiction; this series is lots of fun. Sherlock Holmes fans should check it. #NewBookAlert for January 29, 2020.

Trains, Jesus, and Murder: The Gospel according to Johnny Cash by Richard Beck (Fortress Press; on sale November 5, 2019): Hello I’m Johnny Cash’s latest biography. Trains, Jesus, and Murder oh wow: sometimes when you Walk The Line you don’t maintain your balance. Keep Faith.#NewBookAlert for January 30, 2020.

And How Are You, Dr. Sacks?: A Biographical Memoir of Oliver Sacks by Lawrence Weschler (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Biography on sale August 13, 2019): We lost Oliver Sacks on August 30, 2015 and our society has been all the poorer for that loss. We lost some of the wonder and whimsy of the medical world and one of it’s brightest and oddest doctors. Thankfully individuals such as Lawrence Weschler are keeping Sacks alive. #NewBookAlert for January 31, 2020.
