Humanity Is The Best of Both Worlds

Chilling at home today and during lunch came across the Next Gen episode where Captain Picard was abducted by the Borg. (The Best of Both Worlds, Part I originally aired on June 18, 1990.)

Sweet Josh Groban, I forgot how dark this got!! The Borg’s rebuttal to Captain Picard’s defiant hold on his humanity is: “death is irrelevant.” Ummm yup that’s a checkmate.

That’s up there with the White Dalek promising Matt Smith Doctor Who: “The Earth will die screaming.”

Yo…the Northeast blackout of 2003 wasn’t this dark. Is the malevolence really necessary?!

Look I don’t mind if aliens come and trash the Earth and wipe out humanity. As we voyage deeper into space we’re gonna be jerks and destroy cultures and alien races. We treat each other horribly down here so there’s little reason to expect us to be on “company manners” in space. We’re an awful species so we earn some of the beatings we get. But sometimes we’re just chilling; we’re curious and wanna learn about planets and stars. Sometimes we’re alright.

(My how times have changed too…partly what sparked this episode was writing Picard outta the series. This was Season 3! There’s a parallel universe where nerds only got 3 seasons with Captain Picard. The universe is a wild and strange place…proceed cautiously.)
