Bloodsport: Story vs Narrative

So this is a slightly odd post; just file it away under The More You Know. As epic events unfold…the Vegas shooting, the recent hurricanes…pick any gut-punch from the past 5 years one element they all have in common is they produce lots of social media documents typically videos and photos.

One of the reasons for the proliferation of “fake news” is that many people…including journalists don’t question the source. It’s unsettling to know many journalists don’t compare photos or videos with google earth…or even conduct a reverse image search (which takes less than 30 seconds!!).

One of the legit journalist endeavours tackling the source issue is Storyful. They have an algorithm and a team of journalists that also know a reverse image search takes less than 30 seconds. They don’t get enough coverage (especially compared to rotten narratives) and I’m sure some of the recent Vegas videos were contacted by them.

People know CNN they often don’t know Storyful. Which kinda explains the current predicament we find ourselves in.

Credibility is super important but also Storyful secures licensing fees for the owner of the videos (so anytime a network runs it the owner is getting paid). Which for some events like the recent devastation in Puerto Rico provides a badly needed revenue source. (Remember 2016’s Hillary 9/11 fainting video? Shot by Zdenek Gazda a Czech immigrant taxi driver…thanks to Storyful’s work he earned 6 figures off that video.)

S’it. You don’t hafta believe me; you have the same google as I do.
